Mixtlan: the unofficial capital of raicilla?

The small Jalisco town of Mixtlan is keen to put itself on the map through the second Raicilla Festival 2022, showcasing the agave-based beverage that plays very much second fiddle to that grand old liquor, tequila.

Located in the Sierra Madre Occidental midway between Ameca and Mascota, this charming enclave is surrounded by fields of wild lechuguilla agaves and cliffs, dotted with cabins for out-of-towners seeking real peace and quiet.

Native to Jalisco, raicilla is a potent moonshine liquor produced mostly in Jalisco from the lechugilla agave, a smaller, greener plant than the blue agave used in tequila production, most commonly found in the deserts of Chihuahua and Sonora and the Sierra Madre mountain range.
