Brother of ‘most wanted’ cartel boss detained in Tlajomulco

In a joint Mexican Army and National Guard operation, Antonio Oseguera, the younger brother of the leader of the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG), Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes (El Mencho),  was arrested at a house in Tlajomulco de Zúñiga December 20.

According to the Defense Ministry (Sedena), Antonio “N,” who is known by the nickname “Tony Montana,” is the alleged logistics operator for the cartel, supervising most of its money laundering activities.  Sedena said he was in charge of acquiring weapons for the criminal organization, as well as the armored vehicles, sometimes referred to as “narcotanks,” that the CJNG often like to be photographed with.  His involvement also included coordinating violent reprisals against rival groups, the defense agency said.

Mexican media reports said Antonio “N” has a long criminal record, highlighting prior arrests in both Mexico and the United States. He was arrested in the United States in 1996 on heroin charges, and, in 2001, he served a prison sentence in the state of Mississippi for damage to another’s person’s property, Guadalajara daily El Occidental reported.

Deported to Mexico, Antonio “N” was arrested here and charged for drug trafficking and firearms offenses, but a judge released him on a “technicality.”

Nemesio Oseguera is one of the world’s most wanted criminals, and has a $US10 bounty on his head offered by the DEA.

In the aftermath of Tuesday’s arrest, Jalisco authorities stepped up police patrols in the Guadalajara metropolitan area, wary of a potential outbreak of violence of the kind that has previously followed arrests of high-ranking CJNG members.
