For many people in these parts, snow is the stuff of movies and postcards — a phenomenon experienced through a screen. But this winter, the real thing has descended upon the Nevado de Colima National Park, sending a wave of fascination across the region and drawing visitors to witness it firsthand.
Park staff report seeing everything from spontaneous snowball fights to joyful disbelief on the faces of adults touching snow for the first time. This powerful allure, however, comes with real dangers at altitudes over 4,000 meters.
In response to the season’s first significant snowfall and sustained sub-zero temperatures, Jalisco authorities have activated “Operativo Montaña Blanca,” implementing preventative access controls and strict safety protocols to protect the influx of eager but often unprepared visitors.
