The Lake Chapala Orchestra’s next concert, Classical Jazz, will be held on Saturday, May 10, at 2 p.m.
In the 20th century, classical music was deeply influenced by the development of jazz, and vice versa. Michael Reason, the orchestra’s conductor, has curated a dynamic program that showcases the fusion of these two iconic music genres.
The program will open with an orchestral suite from George Gershwin’s opera “Porgy and Bess,” featuring beloved melodies such as “Summertime” and “Bess, You Is My Woman Now.”
Next, the orchestra will perform Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G, a piece that demonstrates the strong influence of jazz on the French composer’s music. The soloist for this piece will be 16-year-old virtuoso Alexander Vivero. Described as Mexico’s answer to Mozart, Alexander is not only a concert pianist but also a composer and conductor, with four languages fluently spoken in addition to his musical talents.
The concert will culminate with Ravel’s much-loved orchestral masterpiece, Bolero. One of the most popular works ever written, Bolero builds to a thrilling climax with a powerful crescendo from the full orchestra.
The concert will take place at the orchestra’s new home, the Robert Kleffel Auditorium, located at the Instituto Tecnológico de Chapala, on Libramiento Chapala-Ajijic 200.
“Everyone who attended our last concert was amazed by the acoustics and the improved seating layout,” said Reason.
The concert will begin at 2 p.m., and there is ample parking next to the auditorium. Audience members will also enjoy the multi-media presentation, a hallmark of the orchestra’s concerts.
