‘Outdoors in Western Mexico’ goes digital

When digital books are mentioned, many people roll their eyes.

pg9a“They’re not for me!” they say. “I love the smell of wood pulp and the crinkly sound of flipping pages.”

Allow me to make the case for guidebooks like the “Outdoors in Western Mexico” series, which I’m in the process of digitizing—because the printed copies have sold out.

Yes, curling up with a musty copy of “Treasure Island” by the fireplace is a romantic idea. But let’s be honest: no one would spend an entire evening reading a Fodor’s or Lonely Planet guidebook from cover to cover.

In most cases, you’ll only read the specific chapter that interests you. Often, you’ll find yourself reading it to a car full of people on the way to the next beautiful destination. You can even read it while standing in the ruins of a crumbling hacienda, without having to add a physical book to the already packed contents of your knapsack.
