Daniel 5 reminds us that judgment does not begin with ignorance, but with refusal. Belshazzar knew the story of Nebuchadnezzar’s humbling, yet chose to exalt himself anyway. What God had declared holy was treated as common, and what was common was exalted as divine. The hand appeared not to startle, but to testify: God had already measured the heart. When a life is weighed, it is not power, pleasure, or position that tips the scale—but humility before the living God.

Unitarian Universalist Fellowship
Rev. Matt Alspaugh will present “Embodying Resilience” at the Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Sunday, February 1, noon.
The Buddhist teacher Pema Chodron says, “The truth is that things don’t really get solved. They come together and they fall apart … The healing comes from letting there be room for all of this to happen: room for grief, for relief, for misery, for joy.” In these times, especially, being resilient means weathering things falling apart, while still getting through, keeping it together, staying whole. It can even mean becoming stronger—this is the idea of anti-fragility. We’ll explore what being truly resilient looks like, not just individually, but how we might be resilient as a community, a culture, or even a species among species.
Rev. Mary Doane is the service associate (via Zoom).
All services of the Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship are held at noon at St. Andrews Anglican Church, San Lucas 19, Riberas de Pilar. For more information: lcuuf.org.

Common Ground Fellowship at Little Chapel
Flaws, faults, we all have them. The question is, how should we deal with them? We can cover or hide a great many flaws, but isn’t it best to actually fix the problem? Join us Sunday, February 1, as Dr. Ted Rogers takes us through Hebrews chapter 9 in his message, “Cover or Cleanse.”
Common Ground Fellowship at Little Chapel is a bilingual, dynamic, friendly and all-inclusive place to worship our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We believe that the church exists primarily for the benefit of those outside it as we seek to make the love of Christ known to others by serving our community in word and actions. Our worship service begins at 11 a.m. and includes children’s church. Hymn singing is at 9 a.m. and a time of prayer at 10 a.m. We also offer a Wednesday Bible Study beginning at 5 p.m.
We gladly accept donations of clothing and non-perishable food items that go directly to families in need in our purple donation box in front of the Chapel. Among the missions we support, we also host a Saturday car wash fundraiser for Mama Cleo’s boys' home from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m each week. We hope to see you at church this Sunday or during this week’s Bible study.

Lakeside Presbyterian
Sunday, February 1, Pastor Carolyn Hansen will give the sermon, “Why and How Do We Pray Together?”
Christians take prayer seriously—or at least we say we do. Pastors would never step up to preach week after week without preparation, yet in many churches, prayer is treated very differently. We often assume that sincerity alone is enough, confusing spontaneity with spiritual depth. This Sunday, as part of our worship series, Pastor Carolyn will explore why prayer belongs at the heart of corporate worship and how the Bible teaches us to pray together well. Drawing from Nehemiah 9, we’ll see how thoughtful, Scripture-shaped prayer forms us, unites us, and deepens our worship of God. Join us as we rediscover prayer that is intentional, biblical, and shared.
English language service is at 10 a.m. at Constitución 26, in Ajijic, 2nd floor. Enter through the back garage area and walk upstairs. For those with limited mobility, there’s also a small elevator at the front. Join us for coffee and refreshments after the service.
If you are unable to attend in person, join us live on Facebook at lpcchapala or on YouTube at @lpcchapala.
