St. Andrew's Outreach

St. Andrew’s Anglican Church held its semi-annual Outreach Grant Awards ceremony, Sunday, May 4, awarding more than 388,000 pesos in grants in the areas of health, education and community care, specifically for local in-need children, women and families.

Nine Lakeside charities were recognized: Mama Cleo’s Home, Cruz Roja, UVA Scholarship Fund, School for Special Children, Niños Incapacitados, Niñas Sabias, Assoc. Pro Mexico, Poco A Poco San Pedro and Casa Ancianos. In the photo are (L-R) Kari Higgins of Poco a Poco,  Jeane Treloar of UVAScholarships, Ana Luisa Maldo of Casa de Anicanos, the boys from Mama Cleo’s, Reverend Betty Creamer, Alex Bernardino of Ma Ma Cleo’s, Connie Pensar and Helna Feldstein of The School for Special Children. These funds were made possible by sales at Todo Bueno, St. Andrew’s re-sale and consignment shop in Riberas del Pilar. All the store’s sale proceeds go directly to support its charitable mission of “helping our neighbors in need.”

Everyone is invited to attend the “peaceful and respectful” No Tyrants / Hands Off! Rally on Saturday, June 14, taking place on the Ajijic Plaza in front of the Ajijic Cultural Center from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

This rally is in solidarity with more than 1,800 No Tyrants / No Kings / Hands Off! events happening across the U.S. and beyond (See page 1).

Open Circle

Patrick O’Heffernan presents “Doing the Impossible: Desperation, $10 Million Dollars, and an Emmy” at Open Circle at the Lake Chapala Society, Sunday, June 15, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

O’Heffernan is currently co-founder and executive editor of Lakeside News, Jalisco’s only bilingual newspaper. He is also the author of two music columns published in the U.S., U.K. and Mexico. He earned his PhD in International Relations from MIT in 1989. His career includes international journalism, a college professor, and non-profit executive. Author of five books, he was awarded an Emmy, four Addys, national awards from the governments of Japan and Egypt, and an AP Award of Merit.

 

Lakeside Freethinkers

The monthly meeting of the Lakeside Freethinkers will be held via Zoom Thursday, June 19, 4 p.m. and includes a presentation about the benefits and dangers of Artificial Intelligence and whether it threatens human rights. A discussion will follow with participants sharing their personal experiences with Chat GPT and other AI bots.  

A freethinker is one who thinks independently of tradition, dogma or established belief, and includes atheists, agnostics, secular humanists and other skeptics who reject belief in the supernatural.

Tasting

Barb Wedig, a certified sommelier of the Court of Master Sommeliers, will present a tasting of four classic French aperitifs Friday, June 20, 4 to 6 p.m. at the Casa Del Sol Inn. After a 40-year career in the wine and beverage import fields, Wedig came across some quality vermouths made in Queretaro and will present them with early afternoon (low-alcohol) cocktails.
