The Liga MX will launch a semi-professional national women’s soccer league in a bid to develop players to the level of other nations.
The 18-team league will kick off in April of next year with a preliminary two-month cup tournament. The actual league is set to begin in September 2017.
Players must be aged under 23 and each team must include at least four players under 17 on its roster. Teams may use two players free of any age restrictions. No foreigners will permitted.
As with the men’s professional Liga MX tournament, there will be two “championships” held each year, with the Apertura season running September to December, and the Clausura in February and March.
This is the first time the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) has organized a national tournament for women players. The aim is to allow Mexico’s most talented young players to develop their skills within the country and not be forced to move abroad and join clubs in other leagues.
