Thursday evening’s Liga MX quarter-final between Atlas and their hometown rivals, the Guadalajara Chivas, ended in a narrow 1-0 victory for the red-and-blacks (rojinegros).
The first leg of the two-game show-down played out at Atlas’ home stadium, the Estadio Jalisco. The return game unfolds Sunday at Chivas’ newer Omnilife Stadium on the city Periferico (beltway).
The intense rivalry between Guadalajara’s most popular professional soccer teams guaranteed a sellout Thursday. Police made 15 arrests prior to the encounter as fans fought each other in the vicinity of the stadium.
Chivas have already won a trophy this season, the Copa MX. Many of their fans believe the team is on course for an historic double. Their last championship was 11 years ago, in 2006.
Atlas, meanwhile, are in search of the second title in their history. Their only championship was in 1951 – 66 years ago.
Guadalajara will see celebrations Sunday, regardless of which team triumphs.
