Nascar Mexico returns to local racetrack

The return to Guadalajara (or more specifically, Cajititlán) of the NASCAR Peak Mexico Series after a six-year absence is great news for local auto racing fans.

The Autódromo Bernardo Obregón has been completely refurbished to stage this weekend’s fourth round in this prestigious 12-round series.

The track is a three-quarter-mile tri-oval named after driver Bernardo Obregón Tamaríz, who died in the Carrera Panamericana in 1999. It last hosted a major race in 2011.

The track is easily accessible from both Guadalajara and the lakeside area, located about a mile along the road to Cajititlán, shortly after the turn off on the Guadalajara-Chapala highway.

Practice and qualifying take place on Friday, June 2 and Saturday, June 3, and the race itself is on Sunday, June 4.  Tickets at the gate cost 160 pesos.

As well as the main NASCAR event, spectators can enjoy plenty of other automotive fun, including races featuring Tractocamiones Freightliner (tractor-trucks) and Mikel’s Trucks, as well as a Formula 1800 event.

Sunday’s action kicks off at 10 a.m. The NASCAR race is scheduled to start at 1:40 p.m.
