Mariachi Festival not fully silenced

For the second consecutive year, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has forced the Guadalajara Chamber of Commerce into moving its annual International Mariachi and Charreria Festival onto digital formats, although a few live performances are still scheduled.

pg4As with last year, all the traditional large-scale public events have been cancelled during September 10-19 musical shindig. These include the colorful opening parade through the streets of Guadalajara’s historic center, gala concerts at the Teatro Degollado and the free open-air recitals and concerts in the Plaza de la Liberacion.

The single “gala” concert remaining on the program will go ahead at the Conjunto Santander on Saturday, September 18, 8 p.m., when renowned mariachi bands Vargas de Tecalitlán and Los Camperos, together with the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra, will perform. Only 750 tickets — about half the venue’s full capacity — will be sold for the concert.
