Between October 2020 and September 2021, the Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions (AMIS) received 62,583 reports of thefts of insured vehicles.
AMIS reports that the car most favored by criminals was the Nissan Versa, followed by the Nissan NP300 (pickup), Chevrolet Aveo, Chevrolet Beat and Nissan Tsuru. Industry experts say the preference for these models is due to their high demand for spare parts, as well as their easy placement in the black market.
AMIS said 28,910 vehicles of those reported stolen, approximately 46 percent, were eventually recovered.
More thefts occurred during this period in Guadalajara (4,939) than any other municipality in Mexico, AMIS noted. Also, Jalisco is the state with the second highest incidence of vehicle theft, after Estado de Mexico.
AMIS said that in 60 percent of the reports filed, the victims mentioned that some kind of violence was involved in the crime. The cars most favored by violent assailants were the Toyota Hilux, Mazda 3, Volkswagen Vento and the KIA Rio, AMIS said.
