Smog check program completes first full year

Jalisco’s vehicle emissions inspection program, known as Verificación Responsable, has finished its first annual cycle and started its second year of operation.

pg3aAll owners of Jalisco-plated vehicles in the Guadalajara metropolitan area are obliged to take their rigs in for an annual test, as are those in three other urban zones of the state:  Puerto Vallarta, Ocotlan and Tepatitlan.

As yet, there is no obligation for car owners in the rest of the state’s municipalities, including Chapala and Jocotepec, to have a yearly inspection. However, they are recommended to get one if they visit metro Guadalajara or the other urban locations mentioned above on a regular basis.

The testing schedule is bimonthly and based the last digit of a vehicle’s license plate. At this moment in the testing calendar, vehicles with license plates ending in 1 or 2 and should be taken for an inspection in February, those with 3 in March or April, 4 in April or May, and so on (see chart).

Appointments for checks must be made online at verificacionresponsable.jalisco.gob.mx. It’s important to have one’s tarjeta de circulación (vehicle ID) number on hand, as well as bank card details to pay the 500 pesos for the test (550 pesos if you are making an appointment outside of your car’s scheduled bimonthly testing period).

Foreign-plated vehicles are exempt from requiring a test.

Drivers stopped at checkpoints who are unable to produce documentation that their vehicle has been taken for an inspection within the scheduled timeframe will be ticketed.
