Pride month kicks off in Guadalajara with the first of two parades on Saturday, June 8: La Marcha del Orgullo.
One of the largest marches celebrating the LGBT+ community held in Mexico, this event will begin at 2 p.m. at the Minerva Glorieta, and make its way to the Niños Heroes monument, now popularly known as the Monument to the Disappeared. The huge and colorful contingent will follow a route along Avenida Vallarta and Avenida Chapultepec to its final destination.
The slogan of this year’s march is “El crimen no es amar, el crimen es odiar” (The crime is not to love, the crime is to hate), which reflects ongoing homophobic and transphobic discrimination and, in particular, violent and sometimes fatal attacks on people due to their gender identity or sexual orientation. Victims of violence are slated to lead the parade.
