Chapala’s Club Guerpardos celebrates its fourth anniversary with a multi-faceted competition program on Sunday, July 25, that includes two events for disabled athletes. All the events start and finish at La Vela Plaza, located at the west end of the Chapala Malecón.
The first contest is a nine-kilometer mountain bike race starting at 7 a.m.
Conventional five-kilometer foot racing will follow at 8:30 a.m., with male and female runner divisions competing in the youth category (age 14-18), libre (open) category (19-39) and master category (age 40 and up).
There are also special categories for the visually impaired and wheelchair racers going the same distance. The race course is a loop between the Malecón and Riberas del Pilar.
A beach volleyball tournament, open for ten mixed teams (two men, two women) gets under way at 9:30 a.m.
Children can get in on the action with sprint races of varied lengths scheduled for 11 a.m. Youngsters will be broken into five age categories (4-5, 6-7, 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13).
A three-kilometer kayak race is set for noon in front of the boardwalk.
The club will award cash prizes in varying amounts and assorted sporting goods to top performers in each event.
The registration fee for all contests, except children’s races, is 300 pesos per person, and includes a kit with the racer number, commemorative tee-shirt and participant medal. The cost for children is 50 pesos, with a number and medal provided.
The registration deadline is Tuesday, July 20. Competitors may pick up their kits on Saturday, July 24, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at La Vela.
