Firefighters scramble to quell multiple blazes

Sunday, June 4 was an intense day of work for firefighters dispatched to combat simultaneous wildfires spread out at multiple locations in the Lake Chapala region.

pg1cApproximately 80 hectares of land spanning both sides of the Chapala-Ajijic bypass (Libramiento) were scorched by a powerful blaze reported at 12:30 p.m. that was finally extinguished around 8 p.m. Firefighting brigades from Chapala, Ixtlahuacàn de los Membrillos, the regional intermunicipal association Aipromades and Civil Protection Jalisco all joined forces to quell the blaze.

Due to a thick cloud of smoke that hampered visibility, Chapala traffic police blocked off access to the Libramiento until 4 p.m., rerouting incoming vehicles through downtown Chapala.

Residents of nearby homes and four-legged occupants at the Ranch canine shelter were evacuated for their safety. With the fire raging in the immediate vicinity of the CFE substation, inhabitants of the Chapala-Ajijic corridor were subject to intermittent power failures that continued for more than 24-hours in some parts.
