Dementia support group readies for launch

Lakeside DayBreak Dementia Support is the name of a new organization set to launch next month, offering guidance and assistance to those caring for loved ones with early-onset dementia or Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI).

pg11bEach year, approximately 10 million new cases of dementia are diagnosed worldwide. With its large senior population, the Lake Chapala area is particularly vulnerable to Alzheimer’s disease and other brain disorders that impair cognitive function.

Lakeside DayBreak is an initiative led by local resident Elly Contreras, whose husband, Ramiro, has been living with dementia since 2015. Recognizing that she is not alone in navigating the challenges of caring for a loved one with dementia, Contreras has made it her mission to help others better understand issues like memory loss, risk factors, and social isolation. Her ultimate goal is to transform Lakeside into a “Dementia Inclusive Community.”

After completing several courses on the subject, Contreras is now developing a day program for individuals with mid-stage dementia. This program will engage participants in enjoyable activities while giving their caregivers much-needed respite.
