New shopping options at Friday Local Market

The Friday Local Market launched its weekly operations on January 24 at La Huerta Salón, located on the western edge of Ajijic.

The market features more than 70 vendors offering a diverse range of high-quality products.

Project coordinator Alejandro Montes de Oca has focused on introducing new vendors from north shore communities, many of whom are unfamiliar to local shoppers. His goal is to offer unique goods not available at other markets, such as the long-standing Tuesday Farmers Market held at the same venue. Vendor fees are kept modest, with tables available for rent, and charges are even waived for start-up vendors who previously relied on roadside sales.

One notable vendor is a family from Ojo de Agua, near Mezcala, offering a top-quality selection of fresh produce trucked in from metro Guadalajara. Another stand specializes in a variety of fresh and frozen seafood.

As they explore the spacious aisles, shoppers will find an assortment of artisan breads and pastries, homemade ready-to-eat dishes (including gluten-free options), farm-fresh berries and produce, bulk nuts and grains, dairy products, pickles and condiments, natural health and beauty products, fresh flowers, Mexican handicrafts, clothing, jewelry, and fashion accessories.

On opening day, customers discovered everything from gourmet produce like artichokes and asparagus to healthy biónico fruit-and-yogurt combos. Even pets weren’t forgotten—one vendor offered locally made cooked meals for dogs and cats, along with dehydrated treats and pet-friendly pastries.

The indoor market takes place every Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. La Huerta Salón is located just past the Ajijic cemetery and the Smokehouse restaurant. Ample free parking is available along the south side of the highway, with an additional off-street lot next to the building.
