The German painter who found his color in Mexico

The Museo de las Artes (MUSA) of the University of Guadalajara is showcasing more than 200 works by German painter, writer and journalist Ernst Saemisch (1902-1984), who spent the final two decades of his life in Mexico.

Saemisch’s work reflects a life shaped by two world wars, the rise of Nazism, and his eventual emigration to Mexico in 1964. The exhibit traces his evolution from early expressionist drawings — dominated by gray landscapes and distorted human figures — to the vibrant, large-format abstract works he produced after settling in Valle de Bravo, outside of Mexico City.
