Salto grads get jump start on future pursuits

Following their participation in a series of weekly workshops that began in January, 29 young men and women celebrated their graduation from the Salto mentoring program at a ceremony on April 26, held at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) campus.

pg15dSalto is a life skills and mentoring program for youth in the lakeshore region, designed to guide them toward personal achievement and community involvement. The program is aimed at highly motivated individuals ages 18 to 20 who are interested in personal growth and making positive contributions to their communities. The team of mentors consists of Spanish-speaking adults eager to share their knowledge, talents, and experiences.

The four-month program kicked off with an introductory workshop on January 11. Subsequent Saturday morning sessions, held on the LCS grounds, covered cognitive, social, and emotional skills such as self-awareness, decision-making, critical thinking, creative thinking, assertive communication, interpersonal relationships, problem-solving, empathy, emotional management, and stress management. The students also took part in vocational assessments to help determine the educational and career paths best suited to their interests and strengths.
