On March 28, representatives of the Chapala Municipal Government, community leaders, and approximately 70 residents attended an inaugural ceremony to launch a mural honoring the life and legacy of Zara Alexeyewa, widely known as La Rusa.
Among those attending were Alberto Portillo, director of the Chapala General Archive, Ajijic Delegate Jesús Escamilla Ramos, Director of Cemeteries Alfredo Cabrera Jiménez, and Héctor España Ramos, a friend of Zara Alexeyewa, who constructed the mausoleum in the Ajijic cemetery where she rests.
Artists Luis Alberto Mateos Vazquez and Wendy Esmerelda Medina Gomez are currently painting the “La Rusa Mural” on the north wall along the Carretera entrance to the cemetery, next to the Neill James mural. In the mornings, Monday through Friday, the public can find the artists at work there.
