Pope to visit Mexico in February

Pope Francis will visit Mexico in February 2016 but Guadalajara is not on the schedule, church officials here have confirmed.

Pope John Paul II made this city his first port of call in his maiden voyage to Mexico in 1979.

According to Cardinal Norberto Rivera, the archbishop of Mexico City, the trip is likely to start on February 12 and take in the capital and the U.S. border region. Migration has been one the central themes of this papacy.

Almost certain to be on the schedule will be a visit to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City – the country’s most popular shrine.
