CENSUS 2020: Who, what, when & where

Mexico’s Statistics Institute (Inegi) this week released preliminary findings from the 2020 census. Here is some of the most notable data.

pg3a- Mexico’s population: 126,014,024 – 11th highest in the world

- Male population : 61.5 million (48.8%)

- Female population: 64.5 million (51.2%)

- Median age: 29

- State with lowest median age: Chiapas (24)

- State with highest median age: Mexico City (35)

- Most populous states: 1. Estado de Mexico (16,992,418)  2. Mexico City (9,209,944) 3. Jalisco (8,348,151)

- Least populous states: 1. Colima (731,391) 2. Baja California Sur (798,447) 3. Campeche (928,363).

- Largest metropolitan areas: Valle de México (21,804,515), Monterrey (5,341,171), Guadalajara (5,268,642).

- Indigenous population: 11,800,247

- People over 3 years old speaking an indigenous language: 7,364,645

pg3b- Illiteracy rate: 4.7 percent (2,677,192 women and 1,779,239 men)

- People born in a foreign country: 1,212,25. United States (797,266), Guatemala (56,819), Venezuela (52,948), others (305,228).

- Average number of children per family: 2.1

- Population with a physical disability: 6,179,890

- Average years of schooling: 9.7

- Population with a psychological disability: 1,590,583

- Population professing Catholicism: 97.86 million (77.7%)

- Population professing Protestant/Evangelical religion: 14.1 million (11.2%)

- Population professing no religion:  10.21 million (8.1%)

- Number of private homes: 35,219,141

- Average occupancy per dwelling: 3.6

- Homes with appliances and services: television (91.1%), microwave (87.6%), cell phone (87.5%), washing machine (72.8%), radio (67.6%), internet (52.1%), car or truck (46.5%)
