A new public holiday has been added to Mexico’s calendar this year. Tuesday, October 1 will be a mandatory day of rest as the country swears in its new president.
Claudia Sheinbaum will make history as the first woman to wear the presidential seal when she takes office, succeeding Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
A recent change in the law, approved earlier this year, designates the day of the presidential handover as an official holiday every six years.
Under Federal Labor Law, public holidays are obligatory free days for workers. Employees required to work on these days are entitled to double their wages, in addition to their regular daily pay.
