Amid world order turmoil, Russia pushes for closer ties with Mexico

In response to shifting global trade dynamics, Russia is seeking to expand its economic relationship with Mexico.

At the first Russia-Mexico Business Forum held this week in Mexico City, Russian officials and business leaders highlighted the growing potential for bilateral cooperation, especially as trade tensions with the United States create new opportunities for both countries.

The Russian Ambassador to Mexico, Nikolay Sofinskiy, stressed that the global geopolitical landscape is changing rapidly, and both nations should leverage these shifts to strengthen trade ties. He noted that Mexico’s exemption from new U.S. tariffs presents a unique opportunity to boost trade between the two countries, which currently stands at US$2 billion annually. Sofinskiy believes this figure could double in the coming months with the right diplomatic and economic instruments in place.
