The funeral of Pope Francis on April 26 brought closure to a 12-year papacy marked by humility, simplicity, and the championing of the world’s poorest.
In February 2016, Pope Francis made his sole visit to Mexico, a five-day trip that focused on key themes such as social justice, the plight of migrants and the Catholic Church’s role in addressing poverty and violence.
After celebrating large Masses in Mexico City and Puebla, the Pope traveled to two significant destinations at opposite ends of the country. In Ciudad Juárez, then regarded as Mexico’s most violent city, he visited a migrant shelter, met with families affected by violence and held an open-air Mass. His visit to this troubled border city was seen as a powerful gesture of solidarity with migrants and those living in poverty.
