Despite judge’s ruling, still no green light for Uber airport pick-ups

A decision by a federal judge easing some restrictions on app-based transportation at Mexican airports has been misinterpreted by media and political actors, according to the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT).

pg3Last week, reports indicated a federal judge had granted Uber a definitive suspension, allowing its drivers to pick up and drop off passengers at airports across Mexico without the risk of detention by National Guard officers.

The ruling was welcomed by platform companies, drivers and politicians, including Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus, who interpreted it as permission for Uber to pick up passengers from airport terminals—a practice currently prohibited at nearly all of Mexico’s airports. Lemus celebrated the breaking of what he called the “concession taxi monopoly.”
