Vallarta goes green with electric bus revolution

As part of a major public transportation overhaul, electric buses will replace all the diesel units that currently circulate along Puerto Vallarta’s main thoroughfare, Avenida Francisco Medina Ascencio.  Around 20,000 people use this route daily.

pg7aLast weekend, Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus announced a major overhaul in Puerto Vallarta’s public transportation network, a plan that will see 897 million pesos (US$48.3 million) of investment.

The buses will be employed on four new main routes and one feeder route, and run  from Ixtapa, passing the CUCosta (University of Guadalajara campus), Marina, port, and hotel zone to the city center.

The electric fleet will include 18 buses with a 120-passenger capacity and 20 smaller units for up to 70 passengers, operating every five minutes.

The new buses will feature video surveillance systems, disabled accessibility and air conditioning.

Eleven new “stations” will be built, as well as a hub connecting to the Puerto International Airport.

To encourage use, authorities will distribute 50,000 “Mi Movilidad” pre-paid cards to residents and tourists.

Despite the significant investment, fares will remain at ten pesos, Lemus said during his visit to the port.
