Colima: most violent city in the world?

The city of Colima has been branded with a label that may take years to distance itself from.

pg1cIn a recent study of homicide rates in metropolitan areas with populations over 300,000, the leafy colonial city has been slapped with the regrettable moniker as the “most violent city in the world.”

Colima topped the list of “the world’s 50 most violent cities” with 181.94 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the survey carried out by Consejo Ciudadano para la Seguridad Pública y la Justicia Penal, a Mexican-based NGO that has been issuing these annual rankings for the past 14 years.

Mexico registered nine of the ten most violent cities on the list: Colima, Zamora, Ciudad Obregón, Zacatecas, Tijuana, Celaya, Uruapan, Juárez and Acapulco.

Colima’s homicide rate was the third highest since these annual reports began in 2009, after Zamora, Michoacan recorded 196.63 murders per 100,000 people in 2021, and Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua 229.06 in 2010. A Mexican city has led the rankings for the past six years.

New Orleans was the only non-Mexican city in the top ten. The NGO noted, however, that at least four cities in Venezuela were not included “due to a lack of reliable information.” The Consejo also noted “the lack of transparency of the governments of several of the countries with cities that are included in the ranking.”
