The Mexican Pacific hurricane season got underway officially on May 15, although the first storm formation doesn’t usually happen until the first days of June.
Climate experts at Mexico’s national weather organization (Servicio Meteorológico Nacional) anticipate between 15 to 18 cyclones, of which nine are likely to be tropical storms, five category 1 or 2 hurricanes, and as many as four either category 3, 4 or 5 hurricanes.
The names for the Pacific cyclones this season are: Aletta, Bud, Carlotta, Daniel, Emilia, Fabio, Gilma, Héctor, Ileana, John, Kristy, Lane, Miriam, Norman, Olivia, Paul, Rosa, Sergio, Tara, Vicente, Willa and Xavier.
The Civil Protection and Firefighters Unit of Jalisco (UEPCJ) has reported itself ready to respond to any kind of emergency, and assist citizens wherever necessary. UEPCJ operates command centers on the Jalisco coast in Puerto Vallarta and Melaque. The agency confirms that up to 300 additional officers can be immediately deployed from other locations in the state at a moment’s notice.
