An era is coming to an end for lakeside’s most prominent recreational attraction, Tobolandia Parque Acuático.
Located at the intersection of the Carretera and the Libramiento bypass, the sprawling water park will cease operations as of next week. This weekend, Tobolandia is offering a two-for-one admission price to its final customers.
Tobolandia opened its doors in 1996. Spanning more than 40,000 square meters of land, the park comprises 1,500 square meters of swimming pool areas and 19 water slides of various heights and dimensions, along with a large exterior parking lot.
Over nearly three decades, Tobolandia has hosted a variety of special events and activities. It served as the venue for multiple editions of the Mexican National Chili Cookoff until the charity hoedown folded in the wake of the Covid pandemic. Circus troupes frequently pitched their tents in the parking area, and for a brief period, beach volleyball courts were part of the grounds. Most recently, one area was transformed into a canine play park.
Local social media speculation suggests the land may have been sold for a new housing development. However, Chapala Urban Development Director René Ochoa has clarified that the property is owned by a local development firm, which has not yet submitted plans or permit requests for construction.
This newspaper understands that the Aguirre administration remains committed to rejecting authorization for any new residential complexes.
