May Festival offers music in churches & circus arts jamboree

Australia will be the invited country at this year’s 22nd Festival Cultural de Mayo, set for May 7 to 31 in metro area Guadalajara.
Tlaqueparte, the crafts fair that showcases more than 200 exhibitors from all over Latin America, runs Friday, May 3 through Monday, May 6 at Expo Guadalajara (Avenida Mariano Otero and Las Rosas).
Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra
The final concert in the OFJ’s first season of 2019 welcomes guest conductor Iván del Prado (Cuba). Works by Massenet. Deletes, Thomas, Rossini and Sibelius. The invited artist is soprano Anabel de la Mora.
After receiving rave reviews in previous years, the Ballet de Jalisco returns with three presentations of the ballet “The Hunchback of Notre-Dame,” featuring the music of Rachmaninoff, Tchaikowsky, Wolf-Ferrari, Saint-Säenz, Moniuszko, and Khachaturian. Choreography is by troupe director Dariusz Blajer.
Jalisco Philharmonic Orchesta
Guest conductor Christopher Zimmerman (United States) leads the OFJ in works by Smetana, Rachmaninov and Prokofiev. The guest pianist is Sofya Gulyak (Russia).
Kathleen Mullen, a jury member for this year’s Premio Maguey, the award for LGTBQI movies in the recent Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG), had secretly been hoping to receive an invitation for some time.
Monday recitals
Talented musicians of different genres showcased each Monday. April 1: Classical guitarist Enrique Florez (above) and flutist Cuauhtemoc Garcia Verdugo give a recital. April 8: La Orquesta de Cámara Independiente de Guadalajara, directed by Guillermo Salvador, interprets works by Damy, Moncayo and Piazzolla (The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires). April 29: Michaël Bialobroda (cello) and Saúl Ulises Ibarra Ramos (piano).
