Dr. Gabriel Varela, neurosurgeon, moved his 18-year Guadalajara practice to Lake Chapala more than ten years ago. During this decade he has built a thriving local practice and sees more than 200 Lakeside patients a year. “I especially like living here so that I can be on hand to provide attention to my post-op patients and for emergencies,” he says.
Marita Noon, executive director of Energy Makes America Great, Inc. and the Citizen’s Alliance for Responsible Energy, will be the featured speaker at the Wednesday May 13, 4 p.m. meeting of the Lakeside Conservatives Group at the San Juan Cosala Raquet Club.

So we’re letting you know which restaurants are catering especially to moms on their day.
During Sunday’s boisterous celebration of the Feast of the Holy Cross householders in Ajijic’s westside Barrio de Guadalupe will set up doorstep shrines laden with flowers, candles and large supplies of seasonal fruits and assorted pantry staples offered free to all takers. The only condition for hauling away the loot is a pledge to reimburse the favor the following year with a stash of equal or greater bounty than the one received.
Jocotepec’s second most important religious celebration comes to an end on Sunday, May 3. The nine-day festivity honoring the deeply revered Señor del Guaje culminates with an impressive street procession starting at 6 p.m. that departs from the chapel located on Calle Hidalgo opposite the town’s parish church.
For the past nine years the Fundacion Dr. Juan Rafael Duran Barajas has maintained a low profile as one of the few lakeside philanthropic organizations run entirely by Mexican citizens. The charity group will step up its image with the opening of a permanent office located at Lopez Cotilla 347-A, opposite the Chapala plaza, set for Saturday, May 2, 7 p.m.
The new term of Spanish-language classes at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) is set to begin on Monday, May 11 and run through Saturday, June 27. The LCS program uses the Warren Hardy course which is designed for adult students and with classes at several levels so students can continue to learn as they progress.
