Bare Stage Theatre

Lee Blessing’s “Eleemosynary,” running Friday to Sunday, March 27 to 29, offers a riveting exploration of the bonds between three extraordinary women.

Directed by Lynn Phelan, the production stars Deborah Kloegman, Mikhaila Molloy and Diana Rowland as the brilliant Westbrook family: eccentric grandmother Dorothea, her fiercely intellectual biochemist daughter Artemis (Artie) and Echo, a granddaughter with a passion for language. Together, they navigate the complex emotional terrain of family, ultimately moving toward a deeper understanding and appreciation of one another.

Lakeside Little Theatre

Friday, April 3, LLT will open “The Woman in Black,” written by Stephen Mallatratt. Paul Kloegman directs Mark Donaldson and Ken Yakiwchuk.

An accountant hires a young actor to help him tell his story in the hopes of finally exorcising a fear that has gripped him for many years. As the two act out the accountant’s memory, the audience finds itself immersed in a story within a story within a story.  The play runs through April 12.

• The International Jazz Series “El Lago Suena” continues with a concert Friday, April 3, 6:30 p.m. with special guest Italian trumpeter Cosimo Boni at the Garden of Dreams Hotel, Constitucion 105, in Ajijic. • The Camerata of the Puerto Vallarta School Orchestra will present a concert supporting the 1st Cataract Surgery Brigade in the Lake Chapala region. The concert is Friday, April 17, 5 p.m. at the Auditorio del Centro para el Arte y la Cultura de la Ribera in La Floresta. • San Sebastian del Oeste, Jalisco artist David Crum will hold his first solo exhibition at 360 XQMX headquarters, Constitucion 98, Wednesday, April 1, from 5 to 8 p.m.

• The Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo in Chapala marks its 20th anniversary with “Rumores y Colores,” an exhibition by watercolorist Jorge Monroy. The opening is Saturday, March 28, 4:30 p.m. The exhibit showcases a selection of works dedicated to the landscapes and towns of Lake Chapala, capturing the light and atmosphere of the region with masterful technique.

• A closing reception for Val Armstrong will be held at 360 XQMX Residency for Creatives, Constitucion 98 in Ajijic, Sunday, March 29 from 11:30 a.m. to  1:30 p.m. Armstrong is a mixed-media artist from Woodbridge, England and is here for her fourth residency. 

• Forty-two graphic artists from Lakeside and Guadalajara unite for the second edition of Lagografias, contemporary graphic arts showcasing many different styles, at the Centro Cultural Ajijic.

• “Presence, Shared Encounters from Mexico,” an exhibit featuring photographs by Xill Fessenden and sculptures by Moises Perez Solis, adorns Casa del Sol Inn. Javier Mina 7, Ajijic.

 

Film

“A Million Miles Away” (U.S., 2023), a real-life drama about flight engineer José Hernández, born in California to a migrant worker family from rural Michoacán, who became NASA’s first Mexican-American astronaut, is on at the final showing of the Movies That Matter Film Fest at Cine del Lago, Sunday, March 29, 2 p.m.

 

Auditions

• The BRAVO! Theatre will hold open auditions for their October production, “Unwrap Your Candy” by Doug Wright. The show consists of four short comedic plays — including the story of a fetus talking to its mother, a creepy real estate showing, and a tale of a child prodigy. • Las Voces del Lago is holding auditions for its Summer Concert with a Broadway theme to take place July 8 and 9. Singers are invited to audition for the Mixed Chorus, the Women’s Chorus, and Nova Lux. Auditions (by appointment) are Monday and Tuesday, April 13 and 14, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Riberas del Pilar.

Children’s Art Sale

The Efrén González Children’s Art Program will present a Children’s Art Sale on Friday, April 10, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Friday Art Market in La Huerta, West Ajijic. Fifty percent of all proceeds go directly to the young artists, supporting and encouraging the next generation of creative Lakeside talent.

 

Art Auction

Isidro Xilot (Chivo) and Efren Gonzalez will auction recent paintings Saturday, April 4, 3 p.m. in the atrium of the Hospitalito Museum in San Juan Cosala to benefit the Museum’s new projects. Works will be up for viewing as of 10 a.m.
