Lake Chapala Baptist

Last Sunday, Pastor John Linton delivered a galvanizing message – gleaned once again from the prophet Amos – about our connection to God, and to each other as the Church body.

“Today’s Church, like Israel during those times, sets our foundational standards skewed, without a plumb line. Christ brought us a weighty message to keep us in alignment with God. But can the Church bear the words of scripture? Or must they continue to choose only the portions of the Word that suit them?”

Here’s an example from Pastor John’s sermon: The Old Testament says “Thou shalt not kill.” But Jesus says that if you hate your neighbor in your heart, you are a murderer! If you believe God’s Word, how different would your life have to be?

“We are the Church of the living God,” he concluded, “and we have a new covenant. Revival is within our reach, both as individual souls and as God’s devoted Church.”

Lakeside Presbyterian

Pastor Wayne, will give the sermón this week. He says, “I remember reading the news a couple years ago about a horrible act of terrorism. Michoacan police found nine bodies hanging from an overpass alongside a drug cartel banner threatening rivals. Nineteen people in all were murdered as a warning.

“Of all the conversions in the Bible, none is more profound that Paul. He was once a terrorist against Christians and later became one of the greatest advocates and evangelists for Jesus. How could a person change so drastically?” Lakeside Presbyterian Church celebrates this Sunday its 13th founding anniversary.

Bible study has resumed on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the church sanctuary. The book of Matthew is the current focus of this initial, interactive, study.

In-church services are at 9:30 a.m. for the English language service, and 11 a.m. for the Spanish language service. The live English service is streaming each Sunday on Facebook at Lakeside Presbyterian Church-Chapala. All masking and social distancing protocols are in place.

There are coffee and refreshments after the service in the Narthex.

A big thank you for the people who went out to San Juan Tecomatlan and helped with the food and clothing distribution.

Unitarians

February 6, Rev. Matt Alspaugh will talk about “Critical Race Theory” via Zoom only.

Critical Race Theory is the idea that one can analyze systems, institutions, and power through the lens of racism. It developed in the United States in the 1980’s and is beginning to be applied in other countries today. It has come under attack by conservatives who see it as divisive and unpatriotic. We’ll explore how CRT fits in understanding the culture, the history, and perhaps the religion of the USA, and how it might be applicable elsewhere. We’ll also explore how CRT relates to UU values.

Service Leaders are Sue Kelley and Deb Gang.

The theme for the February 13 service is: “Building the Beloved Community: One Drop at a Time;” with Rev. D’Vorah Kelley, an Interfaith Minister and member of LCUUF. Joan Bellamy will be the service leader.

Jewish Congregation

The Lake Chapala Jewish Congregation holds Friday services at 7 p.m. via Zoom. See www.lakechapalajewishcongregation.com for the URL.

Abundant Life Church

When is the best time to correct bad behavior? There are some who tend to think that the bad will correct itself in time and that nothing need be done. Some people simply don´t want to face confrontation and put it off till later. As believers, we know that the best thing for all is to deal with the problem before it grows. Some, trying to avoid confrontation, have left big problems for the next generation. Love for God and love for others means that we will not leave anyone in their sin because we know the end result of sin is always death. Come this Sunday, February 6, as we learn to confront in love and repent before a merciful God.

Abundant Life Church is affiliated with the Assemblies of God of Mexico and has services for everyone.
