In the face of fierce criticism from opposition councilors, Guadalajara City Hall officials have justified the high cost of elaborating a statue designed by the late artist and architect Luis Barragan that will be erected at a “mini glorieta” on the new stretch of the Paseo Alcalde at the intersection of 16 de Septiembre, Leandro Valle and Colegiales in the Guadalajara city center.
The 40-million-peso (almost $US2 million) price tag attached to creating the “Palomar” statue from Barragan’s designs is “barely two percent of the investment earmarked for the pedestrian walkway for 2022,” responded Francisco Ontiveros Balcázar, head of Guadalajara’s Public Works Department. He stressed the “impact” the statue will have on the economic reactivation of the area, in addition to adding to the municipality’s cultural patrimony.
