Movie magic at GDL festival

Film professionals and buffs worldwide will descend on the city next month for the 39th edition of the Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG), a multi-faceted weeklong event showcasing the appreciation, dissemination, promotion and distribution of Mexican and Ibero-American cinema.

pg8bSome 350 films in multiple movie genres will be screened at various metro-area venues throughout the festival, the largest of its kind in Latin America.   The festival’s headquarters will be the Cineteca FICG/Conjunto Santander, owned and operated by the Universidade Guadalajara, the event’s organizers.

Prizes will be awarded in over a dozen categories, including best Mexican film, documentary, Ibero-American film, short film, animated film and best actor, actress and director.

The festival’s opening gala at the Telmex Auditorium will see the screening of “Esta Ambición Desmedida” (This Excessive Ambition), a documentary that takes a unique look at the life and times of Spain’s lauded Grammy award-winning experimental musician C. Tangana.  Directors Santos Bacana, Cris Trenas and Rogelio González accompanied the musician for more than four years, from the genesis of his album “El Madrileño,” through the process of creating and launching a world tour.
