Golf carts on Lakeside streets: unraveling a thorny issue

Earlier this month a reader asked the Guadalajara Reporter to investigate whether the Chapala municipal government intends to impose a ban on driving golf carts on public roads.

pg1dThe simple answer is no, but there are legal technicalities that golf cart drivers need to understand to avoid hassles.

The question of a potential golf cart ban arose from a recent complaint from a driver who claimed he was stopped by a municipal traffic cop and asked for a mordida (bribe) to resolve the matter of a moving violation. The driver is not satisfied with responses sought through different City Hall channels.

According to Chapala press chief Elizabeth Oropeza, Moisés Ochoa, the director of the municipal Traffic Department, reported that the driver was stopped for driving the wrong way on a one-way street. Although she did not reveal whether actions were taken against the officer who allegedly asked for the payoff, she acknowledged that Ochoa has dismissed several officers for engaging in unbecoming behavior while on duty.
