The development of Ajijic’s new cemetery is under way, going public with a groundbreaking ceremony and religious blessing held Sunday, May 5.
The property known as Teopantitla is located 500 meters from the original and nearly full Panteón Municipal situated between Prolongación Ocampo and the Chapala-Jocotepec highway.
The 3,000 square meters of land lies on the south side of the Piedra Viva housing complex, with access via the Playa Escondida roadway. It has space for 400 tombs and 800 niches for cremated remains, along with the Descanso resting chapel for coffins being delivered prior to burial, a sewage treatment system, green areas, restrooms and parking spaces.
The property was acquired by the Chapala government in 2018 in a land secession deal linked to the La Pueblita construction project, subsequently transferred to the Latitud Margaritaville Lake Chapala condominium development.
The land has been cleared since the cemetery plans were approved in March by Jalisco’s Commission for the Protection of Sanitary Risks (COPRISJAL). According to Chapala interim Mayor Gamaliel Soto Pérez, the project will now proceed in at least three separate stages as funding is made available, starting with construction of a perimeter wall to secure the property.
