Troubles have plagued San Antonio’s Malecón since efforts to turn the shoreline marshlands into a public recreational area started a decade ago. 

A huge swath of marshland bordering the San Antonio Tlayacapan waterfront went up in flames Saturday, May 6, devastating the habitat of thousands of wild birds.

Dozens of Ajijic residents have become alarmed by the recent door-to-door distribution of municipal notices asking them to present documents related to the ownership, building permits and public services of private properties. 

Since the last days of April, firefighters from Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos, Chapala, Jocotepec, Tlajomulco de Zúñiga and Jalisco’s Civil Protection brigade have been battling an extensive brush and forest fire that has spread over both sides of the mountain range bordering Lake Chapala’s north shore.

Due to strong winds combined with extreme dry conditions of the land and foliage, more than 150 hectares of terrain within natural reserve area had become scorched mid-week and smoky air quality prevailed throughout the region.
