Cirque du Soleil plans lounge on Riviera Maya

Quebec-based circus arts company Cirque du Soleil will soon be performing its magic at a permanent theater/lounge on the Riviera Maya. According to Spanish-language daily Mural’s finance correspondent Barbara Anderson, the 20-million-dollar project will be underwritten by Cirque du Soleil and Grupo Vidanta, owners of the Mayan hotel chain.

Anderson said the theater would be attached to one of the chain’s hotels and could have a capacity for as many as 1,000 spectators. At least 250 VIP seats would be reserved for those wanting a theater/dinner option, Mayan President Daniel Chavez Moran told Anderson

Cirque du Soleil currently puts on two permanent shows at lounges at the Aria Resort & Casino and Mirage resort in Las Vegas.

Mexico’s appetite for the creative talents of the Cirque du Soleil shows no sign of abating. Last year, the company’s “Immortal World Tour” that used the music of Michael Jackson was the biggest selling entertainment event in the country, with 258,538 tickets sold.

The new theater is expected to open in November 2014.
