Under fire: Shine wears off Mexico’s Covid-19 ‘czar’

The World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom has stated that countries fighting the coronavirus should “test, test, test.”

pg1cHealth experts in many countries believe that mass testing is essential for both getting people the treatment they need and for eventually easing lockdown measures and enabling people to get back to work.   

That’s not how Hugo López-Gatell, Mexico’s deputy health minister and chief Covid-19 spokesperson, sees it.

Answering questions from Mexican senators Wednesday, López-Gatell said that applying Covid-19 tests to the entire population would be “a waste of time, effort and resources,” given the size of the pandemic in Mexico and around the world. “It would be useless, expensive and unfeasible,” he said.
