President Claudia Sheinbaum has, for the first time, used the term “genocide” to describe the Israeli military offensive in Gaza. Speaking at a press conference, she stated, “Our position, in line with the international community, is that this genocide in Gaza must stop.”
Her unusually strong comments follow decisions by four of Israel’s traditional allies—the United Kingdom, France, Canada, and Australia—to formally recognize Palestinian statehood.
Predictably, Israel and the United States have denounced these moves as “rewarding Hamas” and unhelpful for regional stability.
