Briefly - April 25, 2026: Sheinbaum in economy ... US citizen arrested ... airlines rethink ... Mencho fallout

Sheinbaum flies economy

A video of President Claudia Sheinbaum seated in a standard window seat in the economy cabin of an Aeroméxico long‑haul (11-hour) flight from Barcelona to Mexico City has gone viral.

Passengers described a surreal atmosphere as the head of state chatted casually and posed for photos, mirroring her predecessor’s austerity. She also flew economy on her outbound journey via an Air Canada connection.

US citizen arrested for alleged ecocide

“John Frederick,” a U.S. citizen, has been formally charged with ecocide after Zapopan police caught him allegedly starting a fire in the Bosque de la Primavera on April 11. Two lighters were seized at the scene, a rather sketchy police report stated. He faces six months of preventive detention while the investigation continues.

US airlines may reroute Mexico flights

Rising jet fuel prices, driven by the US‑Israeli conflict with Iran, are forcing U.S. carriers to rethink operations, with United and Delta already cutting unprofitable flights and raising baggage fees on routes to Mexico and elsewhere. Travelers to Mexico should expect higher fares and potentially fewer flight options in the coming months.

‘Mencho’ negative news fallout was huge

The killing of CJNG leader Nemesio Oseguera “El Mencho” in February and the subsequent wave of violence — including more than 700 vehicles set ablaze — produced over 40,000 negative news reports worldwide, according to Gustavo Staufert of the Guadalajara Chamber of Commerce’s Visitors Bureau. He noted that fake news, such as false claims of a burning plane and a Costco fire, compounded the damage, causing millions in economic losses throughout February and March. April has shown signs of recovery, Staufert added.
