Tourism creeps back up

The number of foreign tourists visiting the state of Jalisco has still not returned to the pre-crisis/swine flu levels of 2007 and 2008, Governor Emilio Gonzalez noted in his fifth annual report.

Of the 23 million tourists who visited Jalisco in 2011 only 3.57 million were foreigners.   That figure was 3.6 million in 2007 and 3.8 million in 2008. The numbers are disappointing given the fact that Guadalajara and other provincial cities hosted the Pan American Games last October.

On the positive side, hotel occupancy increased to 45.82 percent, marginally better than 2010, although way off the 2007 figure of 52.17 percent. Private investment in the tourism sector rose by 34 percent, Puerto Vallarta won the right to host the annual Tianguis Turistico (March 25-28) and the town of San Sebastian del Oeste was named a Pueblo Magico (magic town).
