Monkeypox case surfaces in PV

On June 4, the Jalisco Health Secretariat (SSJ) received notification from the National Center for International Liaison (CNEI) of a suspected case of monkeypox in Puerto Vallarta.

pg5The patient, a 48-year-old U.S. citizen, had traveled to Berlin, Germany, on May 12 and returned to Dallas on May 16, before flying to Puerto Vallarta on a tourist trip on May 27.

According to the SSJ, the man began to experience symptoms—a cough, chills, muscle pain and pustule-like lesions on the face, neck and body—on May 30.  He went to a private hospital but refused doctors’ requests to take samples, and “fled” the consultation room, the SSJ said.

Doctors reported their suspicions to local health and immigration authorities, the SSJ said, in order to prevent the tourist from boarding a plane and putting other travelers at risk.

However, according to information supplied to CNEI by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the man flew out of Mexico on June 4, returning to Texas where he sought medical treatment confirming the monkeypox virus diagnosis.  The SSJ also revealed that despite his condition, the man did not isolate during his stay in Vallarta, and attended various parties at his hotel.

For this reason, the SSJ put out a call for anyone who attended parties at the Mantamar Beach Club between May 27 and June 4 to monitor their health status for any signs of monkeypox symptoms.
