Death of infant is proof scorpions are dangerous

A one-year-old Wixárika girl died after she was unable to quickly obtain an antidote after being stung by a poisonous scorpion in the community of Los Cajones, in Mezquitic, Jalisco.

pg10Reports indicate that the Mezquitic health center was closed when the parents arrived with the infant.

Jalisco Health Secretary Fernando Petersen said he understood that anti-scorpion fabotherapy was later applied to the girl, but the treatment was too late to save her.  An investigation has been initiated, he said.

Jalisco ranks first nationally in the number of scorpion stings reported in the country, with around 3,000 cases reported each month on average, according to the State Health Department (SSJ).

Although scorpion stings are rarely fatal, the most vulnerable victims are small children weighing under 30 pounds, senior citizens and persons who suffer chronic heart or respiratory ailments.
