Plaza Fundadores comes alive

The annual Fiestas de Octubre provides a great backdrop for a slew of cultural events, many of them held for free in the Plaza Fundadores behind the Teatro Degollado.

There’s a strong international feel to these early evening performances held most days from Saturday, October 6 through Sunday, November 3. Artists from India, Hungary, Canada and Africa will be among those appearing throughout the next month. Of particular note is the performance by the Ballet de Montreal on Tuesday, October 16, 7 p.m. and Amlima, a vibrant African singing and dancing group, on Friday, October 19 7 p.m.  Here is the Plaza Fundadores schedule for the following nine days.

Saturday, October 6: Municipal Ballet Troupe from Ensenada, Baja California, 7 p.m.

Sunday, October 7: Folkloric dance Troupe Kaambal from the Yucatan, 7 p.m.

Monday, October 8: Los Pachamama musical group (world music) from Tabasco, 7 p.m.

Tuesday, October 9: “Extremo Show,” featuring versatile senior citizen performers, 6:30 p.m.; Singer Mercedes Medina in concert, 8 p.m.

Wednesday, October 10: Meera Prasad from India performs native music, 7 p.m.

Friday, October 12: 16th Folklore Expression Dance Festival, featuring groups from all over Mexico, 5 p.m.

Saturday, October 13: La Forja, a Mexico City-based troupe, presents music song and flamenco dance, 7 p.m.

Sunday, October 14: Well-known Mexican folk singer Oscar Chavez accompanied by Los Morales, 6 p.m.
