Celebrated UK ensemble to play at Diana

Britten Sinfonia, an acclaimed ensemble from Great Britain, are undertaking a four-concert tour of Mexico later this month, including one presentation at Guadalajara’s Teatro Diana on Thursday, March 21, 8 p.m.

Britten Sinfonia breaks the mould by not having a principal conductor or director, instead choosing to collaborate with a range of international guest artists from across the musical spectrum.

The orchestra is acclaimed for its virtuoso musicianship, an inspired approach to concert programming which makes bold, intelligent connections across 400 years of repertoire.

Founded in 1992, the orchestra is inspired by the ethos of British composer Benjamin Britten.  Britten Sinfonia has received many awards including two prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Awards in 2007 and 2009, as well as receiving Grammy nominations for their recordings.

At the end of their Mexico tour, the orchestra will also be giving impromptu string quartet recitals in various locations.  The tour is funded by the Anglo-Mexican Foundation, the British Council (Mexico) and Cambridge English Language Assessment.

The program for the Guadalajara concert will include Peter Warlock’s “Capriol Suite,” Benjamin Britten’s “Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge,” Bela Bartock’s “Rumanian Folk Dances” and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “Serenade for Strings.”

Britten Sinfonia will also perform at the 70th birthday celebration of the Anglo-Mexican Foundation at Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City, as well as at the Palacio de Bellas Artes and the Teatro del Bicentenario in Leon, Guanajuato.

Teatro Diana, Thursday, March 21, 8:30 p.m. Tickets 120-400 pesos.
