Dance company on the edge

The future of the Compañia Estatal de Danza Clasica y Neoclasica hangs in the balance with the incoming administration unclear about how to manage Jalisco’s only professional state-funded dance company.

Company director Guillermo Hernandez left his position this week, while members of the troupe sent a letter to governor-elect Aristoteles Sandoval complaining at their treatment at the hands of former state culture officials.

In their missive, the dancers spoke of being refused time off to go to medical appointments and forced to perform while injured.  They also complained of the constant administrative changes the company has endured since its formation six years ago.

The payroll of the 18-member troupe comes to 3.5 million pesos a year.  Anther 1.1 million pesos has been earmarked for the first performances of 2013.

Transition team culture coordinator Myriam Vachez said an evaluation of the company would be made after March 1 to see if the company could continue in its present form, or if a new operating model is needed.
